A range hood is the appliance most people under-budget and later regret. A pro-style range with 20,000 BTU burners throws off heat, grease and smoke that a weak hood can't catch, and the result shows up on your cabinets and ceiling. The luxury range hoods we cover list from about $1,700 to $2,600 MSRP, before blowers and ductwork.
The short answer: if you're installing a Wolf, Thermador or other pro range against a wall, the Wolf 36-inch Pro Wall Hood is the benchmark, because you can pair it with internal blowers from 300 to 1,200 CFM or remote blowers up to 1,500 CFM. Just know the blower is sold separately. If you want the hood hidden inside custom cabinetry, the Zephyr Monsoon Connect insert offers 700 CFM in a built-in liner. If you want a classic under-cabinet hood that's easy to clean, Vent-A-Hood's Magic Lung model moves 600 CFM without grease filters to wash.
All comparisons use published specs, list prices and warranty terms, and our ratings are editorial estimates, not lab results. Use the CFM calculator below, then filter the grid.

Vent-A-Hood Professional (Premier) 36-inch Under-Cabinet Hood with Magic Lung
Vent-A-Hood · Range hood · Under-cabinet hood
- $1,702 MSRP
- 36″ wide
- 1-yr full warranty
- Airflow (CFM): 600
The Vent-A-Hood Magic Lung (Premier 36-inch under-cabinet PRH9-236) is the filterless hood in our lineup, and that's its whole appeal. Its centrifugal Magic Lung blower spins grease out of the air instead of trapping it in filters, so there's nothing to soak or replace. It moves 600 CFM, reaches 6.5 sones at maximum, and includes a SensaSource heat sensor and dimmable LEDs. At about $1,702 from Abt, it's a complete hood with blower, not just a shell. It's loud at full speed and the look is traditional.
Wolf 36-inch Pro Wall Hood, 24-inch Depth
Wolf · Range hood · Wall hood
- $2,585 MSRP
- 36″ wide
- 2-yr full warranty
The Wolf pro wall hood (36-inch PW362418) is the most configurable range hood in our lineup and the natural match for a Wolf range. You choose the blower: 300, 400, 600, 800 or 1,200 CFM internal, or 600 to 1,500 CFM inline or remote. Add a 24-inch depth, an 18-inch height, a heat sensor that boosts the fan above 200°F, two-level LED lighting and stainless baffle filters. One thing to know up front: the roughly $2,585 list price covers the hood shell only. The blower costs extra.
Zephyr Monsoon Connect 36-inch Range Hood Insert
Zephyr · Range hood · Insert
- $1,699 MSRP
- 36″ wide
- 1-yr full warranty
- Airflow (CFM): 700
The Zephyr Monsoon Connect insert (36-inch AK9434BS) is the hood for kitchens where the ventilation should disappear into a custom wood or plaster enclosure. It delivers 700 CFM, more than the Vent-A-Hood Magic Lung's 600, with a sound range of 0.8 to 6 sones, a PowerWave blower, tri-level LumiLight LEDs and baffle filters. Wi-Fi and voice control run through the Zephyr Connect app with Alexa and Google Home. At about $1,699 from Abt, it's strong value, but you still need to build and pay for the enclosure.
How to choose a range hood
Wall hood, under-cabinet hood or range hood insert?
A wall hood is a freestanding chimney or pro-style canopy mounted to the wall, and it's the natural partner for a pro range. An under-cabinet hood mounts beneath an upper cabinet and costs less to install. A range hood insert (also called a liner) is a blower and filter unit built into a custom wood or plaster hood, which is the go-to choice when you want the hood to match your cabinetry.
How much CFM do you need?
CFM measures how much air the blower moves. Size your hood from your cooktop's output, the hood's width and how high it's mounted, not from the biggest number on the box. Oversizing adds noise and cost, and many local codes require makeup air once a hood passes a set CFM threshold, so ask your contractor early. Our range hood CFM guide explains the math, and the calculator below does it for you.
Range hood CFM calculator
Rules of thumb only: about 1 CFM per 100 BTU for gas; about 100 CFM per 10″ of width for electric/induction (150 for islands). Many areas require makeup air above 400 CFM: check local code and the hood maker’s specs.
If you're choosing between gas and induction, factor ventilation in: an induction cooktop doesn't add combustion heat the way high-output gas does, though you still need a hood for smoke and grease. Our gas vs induction guide covers the trade-offs.
Width, depth and mounting height
Your hood should be at least as wide as your cooking surface, and deep enough to cover the front burners. The Wolf Pro Wall Hood we list is 24 inches deep and designed to mount 30 to 36 inches above the cooktop. Match it to your range or cooktop width before you finalize cabinet drawings.
Noise: what sones mean
Hood noise is rated in sones. The Zephyr insert runs from 0.8 to 6 sones across its speeds, and the Vent-A-Hood tops out at 6.5 sones. You'll mostly cook on the lower settings, so check the low-speed rating too. Remote and inline blowers on the Wolf move the motor away from the kitchen, which helps keep the room quieter.
The true cost of a luxury range hood
List price is only part of the bill. The Wolf hood's $2,585 list covers the shell only, so add a blower, ductwork, a roof or wall cap and installation. Duct size matters: the Wolf uses a 10-inch round duct and the Zephyr an 8-inch duct, and your contractor needs to confirm the run is possible before you order. Ventilation is also easy to bundle into a dealer package with your range.

Frequently asked questions
How many CFM do I need for a 36-inch pro range?
It depends on your range's total burner output, the hood's width and depth, and your duct run, so use our CFM calculator rather than a single number. High-output gas ranges usually need far more than a basic hood provides. The Wolf Pro Wall Hood, for example, offers internal blowers from 300 to 1,200 CFM so you can match the blower to the range.
What is a range hood insert?
A range hood insert, or liner, is a blower and filter unit designed to be built into a custom hood made by your cabinetmaker or contractor. It lets the hood match your cabinetry or plaster walls while still venting properly. The Zephyr Monsoon Connect 36-inch insert we cover offers 700 CFM and connects to an 8-inch round duct.
Do I need makeup air for my range hood?
Possibly. Many local building codes require a makeup air system once a hood exceeds a certain CFM, because a powerful hood can pull air back down chimneys and gas appliance vents. The threshold and rules vary by jurisdiction, so ask your contractor or local building department before you choose a high-CFM blower. Budget for it early.
Is Vent-A-Hood's Magic Lung better than baffle filters?
It's a different approach. Vent-A-Hood's Magic Lung uses a centrifugal blower to separate grease, so there are no grease filters to wash; follow Vent-A-Hood's cleaning routine for the blower instead. Baffle-filter hoods, like most pro wall hoods, trap grease in removable filters. Neither is universally better. Choose Magic Lung if you dislike filter cleaning, and baffle filters if you want pro-style looks.
