Speed ovens and microwave drawers

A luxury kitchen rarely has a countertop microwave. Instead, you get one of two built-in answers: a microwave drawer that tucks under the counter or into an island, or a speed oven that combines a microwave with a convection oven and sits in the wall with your other ovens. The models we cover list from about $2,000 to about $5,200.
The short answer: if you only reheat, defrost and make popcorn, buy a 30-inch microwave drawer. The Sharp SMD3070ASY (about $1,999.99 list) does the job for the least money, and the Bosch 800 Series and Wolf drawers add app control or a matching look. If you want a second oven that also microwaves, buy a speed oven. The Wolf E Series 30-inch (about $3,700) is the cleanest match for a Wolf kitchen, the Monogram Advantium (about $4,840) is the feature leader, and the Miele 24-inch PureLine (about $5,199) suits a Miele oven wall.

How to choose a speed oven or microwave drawer
Speed oven or microwave drawer?
Start with what you'll actually cook. A microwave drawer is a microwave in a better location: it opens toward you at counter height, so kids can reach it and you never lift a hot bowl over your head. All three drawers on our list hold 1.2 cu ft, and Sharp, Wolf and Bosch all rate them at 950 W.
A speed oven adds convection and broil to the microwave, so it can roast, bake and brown as well as reheat. That makes it a real second oven in a kitchen that has room for only one full-size wall oven. Our guide what is a speed oven explains how the combination modes work and when a speed oven beats a microwave.
Where each one installs
Microwave drawers go under the counter, usually in an island or below a wall oven. Plan the drawer near where you prep and serve, and keep it out of the dishwasher's landing zone.
Speed ovens go in the wall, typically stacked above or beside a full-size oven, a coffee machine or a warming drawer. Width matters: the Wolf and Monogram are 30-inch units, while the Miele is a 24-inch unit designed to line up with Miele's 24-inch column. Electrical needs differ too. The Miele and the Monogram Advantium both call for a 240/208 V, 30 A circuit, so confirm that with your electrician early.
Specs that matter
For drawers, compare controls and convenience rather than power, since the wattage is the same. Bosch adds Home Connect and 26 auto programs, Wolf adds a Gourmet preset mode and up to 99 minutes of Keep Warm, and Sharp is the simplest and least expensive.
For speed ovens, compare capacity and modes. The Monogram lists 1.7 cu ft and an in-oven camera, the Wolf 1.6 cu ft and 13 cooking modes, and the Miele 1.52 cu ft, 14 modes and a wired roast probe.
Price and warranty
Wolf, Miele and Monogram list 2-year warranties on these models, while Bosch and Sharp list 1 year. Speed ovens and drawers are sold through appliance dealers and work best as part of a package with your other ovens.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a speed oven and a microwave drawer?
A microwave drawer is only a microwave, mounted under the counter with a drawer that opens toward you. A speed oven combines a microwave with convection and broil elements, so it can reheat quickly and also roast, bake and brown. Choose a drawer if you only reheat; choose a speed oven if you need a compact second oven.
Are microwave drawers worth it?
For most remodels, yes. A drawer frees counter space, sits at a safe height for kids and keeps the microwave out of sight in an island. The trade-offs are cost, since the Sharp drawer lists around $2,000 versus far less for a countertop microwave, and capacity, at 1.2 cu ft on all three drawers we cover.
How much does a speed oven cost?
The speed ovens we cover list from about $3,700 for the Wolf E Series 30-inch to about $5,199 for the Miele 24-inch PureLine, with the Monogram Advantium at about $4,840. Installation, trim kits and any electrical upgrade are extra. Dealer packages are where you'll find savings, because luxury brands enforce minimum advertised prices.
Can a speed oven replace a wall oven?
For a small household, it can. A speed oven roasts and bakes with convection, but its cavity holds about 1.5 to 1.7 cu ft, far less than a full-size oven, so big holiday roasts and several sheet pans at once are a squeeze. Most designers pair a speed oven with one full-size wall oven or a range, so the speed oven handles weeknights and the big oven handles holidays.
