The Sub-Zero Designer 30-inch column (DEC3050R) is the fridge to buy if you want refrigeration to disappear into your cabinetry and you're willing to pay for two boxes instead of one. It's an all-refrigerator column with 17.5 cubic feet, Split Climate cooling and Energy Star certification, listing at about $10,265 panel-ready or $11,220 with a stainless door kit. The catch is simple: there's no freezer, so the real budget includes a matching freezer column and a wider wall of cabinetry.
Best for: Integrated / panel-ready look · Design-forward kitchens · Large kitchens
What we like
- 17.5 cu ft of pure refrigerator space in a 30-inch width
- Fully integrated, panel-ready design or stainless door kit
- Energy Star certified
- Four soft-close crisper drawers for produce-heavy cooks
- Left- or right-hinge and internal-dispenser versions
Watch out for
- No freezer; a matching column doubles the spend
- Price is per column, before custom panels
- Full coverage on the whole unit is 2 years
Design and build
Designer is Sub-Zero's integrated line: the column is built to accept your cabinet panels, so the kitchen reads as millwork rather than appliances. If you'd rather show steel, a stainless door kit with a tubular or pro handle brings the list price to about $11,220. Model numbers end in /R or /L for hinge side, and the DEC3050RID variants add an internal dispenser so you get filtered water without breaking the door face.
ClearSight LED lighting with Night Mode and four soft-close crisper drawers round out an interior aimed at people who buy a lot of fresh food.
Performance on paper
Split Climate cooling and NASA-inspired air purification are the same core systems Sub-Zero uses across its built-ins. In an all-refrigerator column, that means the whole 17.5 cubic feet is tuned for fresh food, with no freezer compartment pulling humidity or odors into the mix. For scale, that's nearly as much refrigerator as the 18.7 cubic feet in Sub-Zero's 48-inch side-by-side, in 18 fewer inches of width.
Energy Star certification is a nice extra; many luxury built-ins don't carry it. Wi-Fi through the Sub-Zero Owner's App adds remote temperature monitoring.
Who it's for (and who should skip it)
Buy it if you're designing an integrated kitchen, cook mostly fresh, and have room for a column pair or a separate freezer elsewhere. It's also a strong choice for a second refrigerator in a pantry or bar.
Skip it if you need a one-box solution or have less than about 60 inches of wall for refrigeration. A 36-inch French door model will cost less and fit more kitchens.
Columns also let you place the fridge and freezer apart, such as the fridge near the prep zone and the freezer closer to a breakfast area, which a one-box unit can't do.
Price, warranty and service
Expect about $10,265 list for the panel-ready unit, before panels, plus the cost of a freezer column. Sub-Zero enforces minimum advertised pricing, so savings come from dealer packages. Coverage is 2 years parts and labor and 5 years on the sealed system per retailer listings, plus Sub-Zero's 12-year limited sealed-system parts. Integrated installs reward an experienced installer, so ask your dealer who does the work.
How it compares
The direct rivals are the Liebherr Monolith 30-inch column and the Miele MasterCool 30-inch column, both a little cheaper with slightly less space; see Sub-Zero vs Liebherr and Miele vs Sub-Zero. Our best panel-ready refrigerators and the refrigerator hub cover the rest, and the Kitchen Suite Matcher can plan the full column pair.
Our verdict
The Sub-Zero Designer 30 column is the most refrigerator per inch in its class, with Energy Star efficiency and a long sealed-system backstop. It only makes sense if you budget for a freezer column and panels, but for an integrated kitchen built around fresh food, it's the benchmark.

Questions about the Sub-Zero Designer 30-inch Column Refrigerator
Does the Sub-Zero 30-inch column refrigerator have a freezer?
No. The DEC3050R is all refrigerator, with 17.5 cubic feet of fresh-food space. Sub-Zero intends it to be paired with a separate Designer freezer column, which is priced separately. Plan your wall width and budget around both units, not just the fridge.
How much does a Sub-Zero 30-inch column cost?
List price is about $10,265 for the panel-ready version and about $11,220 with a stainless door kit and tubular handle. That's per column, so a fridge-and-freezer pair costs considerably more, plus custom panels. Dealer packages are where savings usually appear. Ask for both columns on one quote.
Is the DEC3050R available with a water dispenser?
Yes. The DEC3050RID variants add an internal dispenser, so you get filtered water inside the door without interrupting the panel front. Both standard and dispenser versions come in left- and right-hinge configurations, marked /L and /R in the model number. Confirm the hinge side early in design.
