Column Refrigerators: What They Are and How to Pair Them

A column refrigerator is a tall, single-purpose unit, usually all-refrigerator, all-freezer or wine, that's built to be fully integrated into your cabinetry. Instead of one box doing everything, you choose the columns you need, size each one to how you cook, and place them side by side or in different parts of the kitchen.
The quick verdict: columns are the best choice if you want a smooth, panel-covered kitchen and a lot of control over the fridge-to-freezer ratio. They're the wrong choice if you want the most storage for the money, because a refrigerator column and a freezer column are priced separately and the total climbs fast.
Below you'll find how column refrigerators work, common widths and pairings, real list prices from Sub-Zero, Miele, Liebherr and Thermador, and how columns compare with a single built-in refrigerator. Specs come from manufacturer and retailer listings, not our own testing.
What is a column refrigerator?
A column is a full-height appliance, roughly the height of a tall cabinet, that does one job. On this site, the Sub-Zero Designer 30-inch column is all-refrigerator with no freezer at all; it's designed to pair with a separate Designer freezer column. The Miele MasterCool 30-inch column and Liebherr Monolith 30-inch column work the same way.
Almost every luxury column is panel-ready, which is the point. With custom panels, a pair of columns looks like a bank of tall pantry doors. If you're new to the idea, our panel-ready appliances guide explains how panels and installation work.
Column refrigerator vs built-in refrigerator
A traditional built-in, like the Sub-Zero Classic 48-inch side-by-side, puts refrigerator and freezer in one cabinet opening. Columns split those jobs into separate units. Here's how the trade-offs line up.
Where columns win
- Flexibility. You choose the fridge-to-freezer ratio. A household that cooks fresh every day might pair a large refrigerator column with a narrow freezer.
- Placement. The freezer can live near the island or in a pantry, and wine can sit by the dining room.
- Looks. Columns are designed to disappear behind panels with tight reveals.
Where a built-in wins
- Cost per cubic foot. The Sub-Zero Classic 48-inch gives you 29.1 cu ft total for about $14,065 panel-ready. A Sub-Zero 30-inch refrigerator column alone gives you 17.5 cu ft for about $10,265, before you buy a freezer.
- Simplicity. One appliance, one installation, one service call.
- Built-in features. Combined units often include an ice maker and dispenser in one place.

Column refrigerator sizes
Column widths vary by brand, so check each maker's lineup. In our data, refrigerator columns come in 30-inch and 36-inch widths and wine columns in 24-inch, and Sub-Zero's 24-inch wine column stands 84 inches tall.
| Column on this site | Width | Capacity | List price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sub-Zero Designer refrigerator column | 30 in | 17.5 cu ft | about $10,265-$11,220 |
| Miele MasterCool refrigerator column | 30 in | 16.77 cu ft | about $9,699 |
| Liebherr Monolith refrigerator column | 30 in | 15 cu ft | about $9,999 (retailer) |
| Thermador Freedom refrigerator column (T36IR905SP) | 36 in | 20.6 cu ft gross | about $9,099 |
| Sub-Zero Designer wine column | 24 in | 102 bottles | about $8,685-$9,595 |
| Miele MasterCool wine column | 24 in | 104 bottles | about $9,449 |
Two notes on those numbers. Thermador quotes gross capacity, which reads larger than a usable figure, so don't compare it directly to Sub-Zero's number. And Sub-Zero's price range is panel-ready at the low end and stainless door kit with handle at the high end. Fisher & Paykel also sells a 36-inch Series 11 integrated column (RS3684WRUVE1), which wasn't priced in our data.
How to pair column refrigerators
The classic pairing is a wider refrigerator column next to a narrower freezer column. Most families use far more fresh-food space than freezer space, so a 30-inch refrigerator with a smaller freezer is a common starting point. Ask your dealer which freezer widths that brand offers, because it varies.
A few pairing rules that save headaches:
- Stay within one brand for side-by-side columns. Matching heights, reveals and hinge details make a pair look like one unit.
- Plan hinge directions. Many columns come in left- and right-hinge versions (Sub-Zero offers DEC3050R/L and DEC3050R/R). Pairs usually open away from each other, like French doors.
- Respect the installation rules for adjacent units. Some brands require a specific gap, a divider or a heater kit between two columns installed side by side. Read the installation guide before cabinet drawings are final.
- Add wine where it's used. A wine column next to the refrigerator makes a dramatic wall; one near dining makes daily life easier. See best luxury wine refrigerators.
The column refrigerators worth knowing
Sub-Zero Designer: the reference standard
The Sub-Zero Designer 30-inch column is Energy Star rated, has four soft-close crisper drawers and Split Climate cooling, and offers an internal-dispenser variant. Sub-Zero's standard warranty adds 5 years full and 12 years limited on the sealed system. Skip it if you're price-driven; you'll pay for the name and service network.
Miele MasterCool: handleless and tech-forward
The Miele MasterCool 30-inch has a Push2open handleless door, a color touch display and MasterFresh drawers with temperature and humidity control, for about $9,699. Miele's US warranty is 2 years, with extended plans available up to 10 years. It's a strong pick for a minimalist kitchen.
Liebherr Monolith: the freshness specialist
The Liebherr Monolith 30-inch brings BioFresh-Plus drawers, one of which can drop to 28°F for seafood, plus internal filtered water. It lists the smallest capacity of the three, at 15 cu ft. Compare it head-to-head in Sub-Zero vs Liebherr.
Thermador Freedom: the most space per dollar
Thermador's 36-inch Freedom column (T36IR905SP) lists 20.6 cu ft gross for about $9,099, and Freedom refrigeration may qualify for Thermador's 2026 Gift With Purchase event (January 1 to December 31, 2026). Confirm qualifying models with a dealer. Read Sub-Zero vs Thermador refrigerators if you're cross-shopping.
Who should skip column refrigerators
Columns aren't the right answer for every kitchen. Skip them if:
- You need maximum capacity on a budget. A single built-in or side-by-side delivers more cubic feet per dollar.
- Your wall is under about 48 inches. Two columns plus required gaps eat space quickly, and a single 36-inch French door may serve you better.
- You want stainless. Columns are designed around panels. A stainless built-in is often the cleaner choice for a pro-style kitchen.
- You want an external dispenser. The columns on this site offer internal dispensers at most.
Installation and service notes
Columns need exact cabinet openings, anti-tip anchoring and properly weighted panels. Use an installer who has set that brand before, and confirm authorized service in your area. With two or three separate appliances, you also have two or three potential service calls instead of one, so local service coverage matters even more.

Frequently asked questions
What is a column refrigerator?
A column refrigerator is a tall, single-purpose appliance, usually all-refrigerator, all-freezer or wine, designed to be fully integrated behind cabinet panels. Instead of buying one combined unit, you choose separate columns and size each one for how you cook. You can place them side by side to look like one appliance, or in different parts of the kitchen.
Do column refrigerators have freezers?
A refrigerator column usually has no freezer. Sub-Zero's Designer 30-inch column, for example, is all-refrigerator, and it's designed to pair with a separate Designer freezer column. That's the core trade-off of columns: you get to choose your exact fridge-to-freezer ratio, but you buy and install two appliances to get both functions.
How much does a column refrigerator cost?
In our data, 30-inch refrigerator columns list from about $9,699 (Miele MasterCool) to about $11,220 (Sub-Zero Designer with a stainless door kit). Thermador's 36-inch Freedom column lists around $9,099. Remember to add a freezer column, custom panels and installation, because a refrigerator column alone is only part of the cost.
Are column refrigerators worth it?
They're worth it if you want a fully integrated kitchen, control over the fridge-to-freezer split, or appliances in separate locations. They're not worth it if you mainly want storage for the money. A single built-in like the Sub-Zero Classic 48-inch lists 29.1 cu ft for about $14,065, while a 30-inch Sub-Zero column alone holds 17.5 cu ft.
Can you put two column refrigerators side by side?
Yes, that's the most common setup. Stay within one brand so heights and reveals match, plan the hinges to open away from each other, and follow the manufacturer's rules for side-by-side installation. Some brands require a set gap, divider or heater kit between adjacent columns, so check the installation guide before your cabinet drawings are final.
