The Breville Oracle Jet (BES985) is the best bridge between push-button and real espresso. It lists at $1,999.95 at Breville and Seattle Coffee Gear, and it grinds, doses and tamps for you into a full-size 58 mm portafilter, then textures milk hands-free with Auto MilQ. You still lock in the portafilter and pull a café-style shot, but the hard parts are automated. Dual ThermoJet heating and a Baratza European Precision steel burr grinder with 45 settings round it out. It's big and partly automated, which won't suit purists.

Best for: Coffee lovers · Milk drinks · Push-button convenience · Attainable luxury

What we like

  • Auto grind, dose and tamp into a 58 mm portafilter
  • Baratza European Precision steel burrs, 45 settings
  • Auto MilQ hands-free microfoam with dairy and alt-milk settings
  • Cold Brew and Cold Espresso programs
  • $1,999.95, about half a Linea Micra plus grinder

Watch out for

  • 16.6 inches wide, a big countertop footprint
  • Breville doesn't publish pump pressure or hopper capacity
  • Automation leaves less room for hands-on technique

Design and build of the Breville Oracle Jet

The Oracle Jet is 16.6 inches wide, 14.2 inches deep and 14.9 inches tall, so it needs a generous stretch of counter, though its height fits under standard upper cabinets. Finishes are brushed stainless steel, black and damson blue. A touchscreen guides you through drinks and saves favorites.

The 58 mm group is the same diameter as commercial machines and the Rocket and La Marzocco here, which means a wide ecosystem of baskets and tampers if you upgrade later.

Performance on paper

Heating uses dual ThermoJet systems, one for water and one for the group, which heat quickly compared with traditional boilers. In practice, that means less waiting in the morning and steam ready alongside brewing.

The grinder is the big upgrade from older Breville models: Baratza European Precision steel burrs with 45 settings, dosing directly into the portafilter and tamping automatically. That removes the two steps where beginners most often go wrong.

Auto MilQ textures milk in the 480 ml jug to a set temperature between 104 and 167°F, with 8 texture levels and separate settings for dairy and alternative milks. Cold Brew and Cold Espresso programs cover iced drinks. The 2.5 L tank figure comes from a Canadian dealer; Breville's US page doesn't list it.

Who it's for (and who should skip it)

Buy it if you want café-quality espresso and latte art-ready milk without spending months learning. It suits couples who drink two or three milk drinks a day and like the ritual of a portafilter.

Skip it if you want one-button coffee for the whole household; a Jura or De'Longhi is simpler for guests and kids. Skip it, too, if you want full manual control; a Lelit Bianca with a separate grinder is the enthusiast route. Use our coffee finder to sort out which camp you're in.

It's also a good choice for households where one person loves espresso and the other just wants a latte. Saved drinks on the touchscreen and Auto MilQ make it easy for a non-enthusiast to get a consistent drink without learning to steam milk.

Price, warranty and service

Breville lists $1,999.95, the same at Seattle Coffee Gear. Seattle Coffee Gear lists a 2-year manufacturer warranty. Automatic grinding, tamping and milk systems add parts that can need service, so buy from a retailer with a solid repair or exchange policy.

How the Breville Oracle Jet compares

Jura vs Breville weighs it against the Jura E8. The Breville Barista Express Impress is the manual-steam entry point at $799.95. See best luxury espresso machines and our coffee hub.

Our verdict

The Breville Oracle Jet automates the hard parts of espresso, grinding, dosing, tamping and milk, while keeping the 58 mm portafilter ritual. At $1,999.95 with a Baratza-burr grinder built in, it's strong value. Buy it to learn less and drink better; buy Jura for one-touch simplicity.

Questions about the Breville Oracle Jet

Is the Breville Oracle Jet a super-automatic?

No. It's an automated semi-automatic. It grinds, doses and tamps into a 58 mm portafilter, and Auto MilQ textures milk, but you lock the portafilter into the group yourself. Super-automatics like Jura do every step internally, including disposing of the used puck.

Does the Oracle Jet have a built-in grinder?

Yes. It uses Baratza European Precision steel burrs with 45 grind settings, dosing directly into the portafilter. That saves buying a separate grinder, which the Lelit Bianca and La Marzocco Linea Micra both require, and it keeps your counter to a single appliance and a single power outlet.

Oracle Jet or Oracle Touch?

The Oracle Touch is the older touchscreen sibling. The Oracle Jet is the current model, with dual ThermoJet heating, the Baratza steel-burr grinder with 45 settings, and Cold Brew and Cold Espresso programs. If you're buying new, the Jet is the one we'd choose.
