Alfa Forni appliances: review and lineup

Alfa Forni is an Italian pizza oven maker with a plant in Anagni, Italy, where its ovens are made. It's known for wood-fired and gas pizza ovens for home and outdoor kitchens across its Moderno, Classico and Futuro lines. Alfa sits between portable pizza ovens and fully built-in masonry: big enough for a party, but still an oven you can place on a counter or stand.

Our database covers the Alfa Moderno 3 Pizze gas pizza oven (about $4,849 list at a major retailer for the oven top in natural gas). It cooks up to three Neapolitan pizzas at once on 620 sq in of cooking area, with a 61,500 BTU burner. Alfa says it reaches about 500°C (932°F) in about 30 minutes; one retailer lists 1,000°F, so treat the higher figure with caution. It also bakes 2 to 3 kg of bread. An optional Hybrid Kit converts it from gas to wood, and a wood-fired version is sold too. You can buy it as a top only, on a base or on a table. Finishes are Ruby (antique red) and Anthracite Grey, and it weighs 215 lb, so plan a sturdy counter.

Alfa doesn't publish US prices, so expect retailer pricing to vary. The warranty is 2 years on parts and 3 years on the gas burner, with labor not included, per a major retailer.

Who should shop Alfa: families and hosts who make pizza for groups, and buyers who want Italian-made construction with the option to switch to wood. Who should skip it: anyone with limited space or who'll make one or two pizzas at a time; the Gozney Dome is smaller and costs about half as much. For a built-in, all-stainless option, see the Kalamazoo Artisan Fire.

Questions about Alfa Forni

Is the Alfa Moderno 3 Pizze worth it?

For people who cook pizza for a crowd, yes. It bakes up to three Neapolitan pizzas at once, reaches about 500°C in about 30 minutes and can switch to wood with an optional kit. Our editorial ratings, estimated from specs rather than tests, score it a 5 for design and a 4 for performance and value.

Can the Alfa gas pizza oven burn wood?

Yes, with the optional Hybrid Kit, which converts the Moderno 3 Pizze from gas to wood. Alfa also sells a wood-fired version of the oven. If you want wood flavor every time, buy the wood model; if you want weeknight convenience with the option of wood, choose gas plus the kit.

Where is Alfa made?

Alfa ovens are made in Italy at the company's plant in Anagni. The Moderno line uses refractory and steel construction. Alfa doesn't publish US prices, so compare authorized retailers, and confirm the fuel type (natural gas or propane) before you order, since that's set by the model.
