U-Line appliances: review and lineup

U-Line is an undercounter refrigeration specialist based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Founded in 1962 by Henry Uihlein, it makes clear-ice machines, beverage centers, wine refrigerators and refrigerator drawers, and Middleby announced its acquisition of the company in October 2014. If you're building a bar, butler's pantry or island run, U-Line is a brand that focuses on exactly those spaces.

Our database covers the U-Line 1 Class 15-inch Clear Ice Machine (about $4,099 MSRP in stainless, with other finishes listed lower at one retailer). It's rated at 55 lb of ice a day with a 25 lb bin and makes clear square cubes. U-Choose lets you set how full the bin gets, and you get a digital touchpad, a cleaning-needed indicator, LED lighting and a field-reversible door. It comes in stainless, black, white or panel-ready, and a pump-drain version (UHCP115) is available.

One important limit: this model isn't approved for outdoor use. U-Line sells separate outdoor models, so choose those for a patio kitchen.

The warranty is 1 year parts and labor plus 5 years on sealed-system parts, and registering the product adds another year of parts and labor, so register it. As with any ice machine, regular cleaning keeps output up.

Who should shop U-Line: indoor bars and kitchens that want clear ice in a color finish, and buyers who'd rather not pay for the top luxury badge. Who should skip it: outdoor kitchens (choose an outdoor-rated model) and hosts who need the most ice; the Scotsman Brilliance and Sub-Zero Designer 15 are both rated at 65 lb a day.

The U-Line 1 Class 15-inch clear ice machine (UHCL115) is the most flexible-looking clear-ice maker in this group, with stainless, black, white and panel-ready finishes. U-Line rates it at 55 pounds of clear square cubes a day with a 25-pound bin. MSRP is about $4,099 for stainless, though AJ Madison showed sale prices from about $3,299 to $3,719 depending on finish. It makes less ice than Scotsman or Sub-Zero and isn't approved for outdoor use. For indoor bars that want square cubes and a color choice, it's a good fit.

Questions about U-Line

Is U-Line a good ice maker?

On paper, it's a solid mid-priced choice. The 1 Class 15 is rated at 55 lb of clear ice a day with a 25 lb bin and comes in four finishes. Our editorial ratings, estimated from specs rather than tests, score it a 4 for performance, design and value, a step below Scotsman and Sub-Zero on output.

Can the U-Line UHCL115 be installed outdoors?

No. The 1 Class 15-inch clear ice machine isn't approved for outdoor use, per its listing; U-Line's outdoor models are sold separately. If you're building an outdoor kitchen, choose an outdoor-rated ice maker such as the Scotsman Brilliance or the Sub-Zero Designer 15, both approved for outdoor installation.

What warranty does U-Line offer?

U-Line lists 1 year parts and labor and 5 years on sealed-system parts, plus an extra year of parts and labor when you register the product. That effectively makes it 2 years of parts and labor with registration, so register as soon as it's installed and keep your paperwork.
