The best built-in grill for most luxury outdoor kitchens is the Lynx Professional 42-inch with a Trident infrared burner. It has 1,200 sq in of total cooking area, a rear infrared rotisserie and a lifetime warranty on the body, burners and grates, for about $9,559. If you want the most grill for the money, the DCS Series 9 36-inch costs about $8,099 and covers 300 to 1,100°F. If you want to cook over wood and charcoal as well as gas, the Kalamazoo K750HB is the ultimate high-end gas grill at about $25,295.

All five picks are built-in gas grills designed to drop into an outdoor kitchen island, and each runs on natural gas or propane. Choose the grill first, because its cutout drives the rest of the island design.

We have not tested these grills. Our picks come from manufacturer and retailer specs, warranties, list prices and what owners and dealers commonly report.

The Lynx Professional 42 is the best all-rounder. It pairs two 25,000 BTU ceramic burners with an adjustable Trident infrared burner that Lynx rates from 300 to 1,000°F, so one side sears hard while the other cooks gently. A dual-position rear infrared rotisserie, a smoker box, hot-surface ignition and a spring-assisted hood complete the package.

It suits serious cooks and anyone who hosts big groups, since 855 sq in of primary space feeds a crowd. It lists for about $9,559 in stainless, or about $10,089 in Obsidian Black. The Lynx color collection is a real bonus if you want something other than stainless.

The trade-off is the warranty structure. Lynx covers the body, ceramic burners and grates for life, but labor for only 1 year. At 42 inches it also needs a longer island run than the 36-inch picks. Skip it if you want wood and charcoal cooking.

DCS (sold as DCS by Fisher & Paykel) gives you the most for your money. Its patented U-burners cover a 300 to 1,100°F range, so you get serious searing without paying for a separate infrared zone. If you want one anyway, the RCI version adds a 24,000 BTU infrared sear burner. There's an infrared rotisserie rated for 50 lb, a charcoal smoker tray and a hood that opens to 90°.

It suits families and entertainers who want pro-grade results in a 36-inch cutout. It lists for about $8,099, or about $8,399 with the infrared sear burner. The warranty is 2 years parts and labor, 5 years on select components, and lifetime on the burners, burner box and grates (labor excluded).

The trade-off is fewer finish options: it comes in brushed stainless only. Skip it if you want a bold color.

Hestan's 36-inch grill stands out in a design-led backyard. It comes in Steeletto stainless or 11 signature colors, from Matador red to Pacific Fog. It has three 25,000 BTU Trellis burners in 321 stainless, a ceramic infrared rotisserie with a concealed chain-drive motor rated for 50 lb, laser-cut grates and a flip-to-clean radiant tray.

It suits owners who want the grill to match a Hestan indoor range or simply look great. It lists for about $10,099, or about $10,299 for the GMBR36 with an infrared sear burner. Hestan covers the body, grates and burners for life.

The trade-off: labor is not included in Hestan's grill warranty. Retailer listings conflict on the rotisserie burner's BTU, and colored finishes are priced on request. Its 653 sq in of primary space is smaller than the Lynx or Wolf. Skip it if you want the most cooking area per dollar. Our Lynx vs Hestan grill comparison goes into the head-to-head.

Kalamazoo's K750HB is for people who treat live fire as a hobby. Its Hybrid Fire design burns gas, charcoal and wood in any combination, using cast stainless Dragon Burners and a dedicated wood and charcoal drawer. You can light charcoal with gas, then cook over wood smoke. Pellet inserts and an infrared gas rotisserie expand what it can do.

It's handcrafted in Kalamazoo, Michigan, from heavy-gauge stainless, with a 316L marine-grade option for coastal homes. The warranty is the strongest here: 2 years full parts and labor, and 25 years limited on the Dragon Burners, grates and structure. It lists for about $25,295, or about $25,995 direct.

The trade-off is cost, and availability: one major retailer listed it as sold out when we checked. Hybrid fire also means ash to clean out. Skip it if you just want fast weeknight gas grilling.

Wolf's OG36 makes sense if your indoor kitchen is all Sub-Zero and Wolf and you want one dealer and one service network. It has two 25,000 BTU grill burners and a 25,000 BTU infrared sear zone, plus a two-position infrared rotisserie, a smoking tray and LED-lit knobs. The total cooking area is listed at 1,080 sq in.

It lists for about $7,805, the lowest price here, with a 2-year full warranty, and it's made in the USA.

The big caveat is availability. Wolf marks the OG36 as "Limited Availability," and one major retailer lists it as no longer available, so it may be phasing out. Confirm stock and parts support with your dealer before you design an island around it. Skip it if you can't get a firm delivery date. Lynx and DCS are safer long-term bets.

Prices are manufacturer or retailer list prices when we last checked; luxury brands set minimum advertised prices, so savings usually come from dealer packages and rebates. Ratings are editorial estimates: see how we rate.

Built-in gas grill size: 36 vs 42 inches

A 36-inch built-in gas grill feeds most families and keeps the island compact. Go to 42 inches if you regularly cook for 12 or more, or want to sear and cook gently at the same time. Compare primary cooking area, not total. Total figures include warming racks, which hold food but don't cook it.

Infrared searing and rotisserie burners

Every pick has an infrared rotisserie, which is the mark of a high-end gas grill. Searing works differently by brand. Lynx uses an adjustable Trident infrared burner, Wolf has a dedicated sear zone, and DCS gets very hot from its standard burners, with infrared as an option. Hestan's GMBR36 variant adds a sear burner.

Natural gas vs propane

Every grill here comes in natural gas or propane versions, and you order the one that matches your hookup. Natural gas means no tanks to refill, but it needs a gas line run to the island, which is part of your outdoor kitchen cost. Decide before you order.

Materials, warranty and coastal homes

Look for 304 stainless or better. Kalamazoo offers 316L marine-grade steel for salt air. Read each warranty closely: lifetime body and burner coverage is common, but labor coverage ranges from 1 year (Lynx) to none (Hestan) to 2 years (DCS, Kalamazoo, Wolf).

Plan the whole outdoor kitchen

The grill is the anchor, but most outdoor kitchens also need cold storage. See our best outdoor refrigerators and, if you bake, our best outdoor pizza ovens. Browse every model on the outdoor kitchen hub, or open the DCS Series 9 page for full specs. A dealer quote for the full package helps, since installation and gas work add up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best built-in grill?

The Lynx Professional 42-inch with the Trident infrared burner is our top pick. It has 1,200 sq in of total cooking area, an adjustable infrared burner rated from 300 to 1,000°F, a rear rotisserie and lifetime coverage on the body, burners and grates. It lists for about $9,559. For less money, the DCS Series 9 36-inch costs about $8,099.

Is a high-end gas grill worth it?

A high-end gas grill is worth it if it's built into a permanent outdoor kitchen. In that setting, heavy stainless construction and long burner warranties pay off over years of use. Luxury built-ins add infrared searing, rotisseries and better heat control. If you grill only a few times a summer, a good freestanding grill will cost far less.

Should I get a natural gas or propane built-in grill?

Choose based on your hookup. Natural gas is convenient because you never refill tanks, but it needs a gas line to the island. Propane works anywhere and is easier to install. All five grills in this guide come in both versions, so order the one that matches your fuel. Conversion later may not be simple, so decide up front.

Is the Wolf outdoor grill discontinued?

Wolf marks the OG36 36-inch outdoor gas grill as "Limited Availability," and at least one major retailer lists it as no longer available. That suggests it may be phasing out. If you want it to match a Wolf indoor kitchen, confirm stock, delivery dates and parts support with your dealer before designing your island around its cutout.

How much does a luxury built-in grill cost?

The grills here list from about $7,805 for the Wolf OG36 to about $25,995 for the Kalamazoo K750HB. Most premium 36- to 42-inch gas grills fall between about $8,000 and $10,300. Budget separately for the island, gas line, ventilation if covered, and installation. Those costs can match or exceed the price of the grill.
